A Virtual Tour of Chichen Itza
About five years ago I took a much anticipated vacation to see the Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza. I had seen the Aztec center of Tenochtitlan several years before, and this completed my tour of Mexico's most significant ancient American sites. Despite the heat, it was awesome.
I translated the pictures I took and information I learned into a powerpoint to share with my Spanish class. I uploaded my lesson to TeachersPayTeachers as two separate files. I uploaded the ppt as one and another file with the ppt + worksheet. They are priced at $4 and $5 respectively.
Check it out today! Or wait until tomorrow when this and everything else in my store is 20%. The sale goes from May 6-7 in honor of Teacher Appreciation week.

Spanish Stations Worth Checking Out
One of the easiest ways to differentiate in the classroom is to use centers/stations. I use them regularly in my Spanish classes to review the objectives from each unit. I have students do a self assessment to determine where they are strong and what they need to work on. Then I introduce anywhere between 8 and 12 stations, making it clear what each station covers. They can then determine which stations they want to do. They can move at their own pace, working on the objectives they choose to review. I help them to pace themselves and circulate to answer questions and provide individual direct instruction where necessary. Here are some of the stations I have for sale on Teachers Pay Teachers.
#1: Here is a collection of 8 stations covering introductory vocabulary. At just $2, it is one of my best sellers and best deals!
#2: For just $1.00 you can purchase a set of activities that focuses on the vocabulary for greetings.
#3: Also, for $2.50 you can purchase a set of activities that focuses on just the number vocabulary.

Fabulous Friday Freebies: Day of the Dead
I have found that any student, no matter their heritage, enjoys learning about and celebrating the Day of the Dead holiday in class. I have celebrated Day of the Dead in my classroom in a few ways. I showed students a PowerPoint presentation on the Day of the Dead and we created some skull sculptures using wire. Then, in a few classes my students are making sugar skulls since they are an easy non-bake project that I can do in my classroom. Since this week is the celebration of the Day of the Dead, here are some fun freebies you can use in your classroom to celebrate the Day of the Dead.
Note: You do not only have to celebrate Day of the Dead during its official time. Students really enjoy learning about this holiday at any time of the year!
This website has a wide range of Day of the Dead activities compiled for teachers. There are links to free PowerPoint slideshows, mini packets, education units, and art activities. They have done the work for you researching various sites and compiled them in one easy to use list.
Although there are a few grammatical errors in this free PowerPoint, I have used it multiple times with various classes to introduce the Day of the Dead. This PowerPoint contains a lot of relevant information with an enormous amount of photos that makes it easy to teach students about the basics of the Day of the Dead. I highly recommend it!
My partner in blogging Etc offers a free Day of the Dead word search puzzle that is a sample from her fall packet. You could use this as a fun activity for fast/early finishers in your classroom.
My classrooms are finishing up their Day of the Dead sugar skulls today. I'll take some photos and share the recipe and tips with you next week! Enjoy the Day of the Dead.

Best Game to Get Students Speaking Spanish
Rey del Mundo is a great game to play in the classroom to get your students speaking Spanish. It is a version of hot potato. But, instead of passing something around physically, students are speaking and calling on their classmates to speak in Spanish. When it is that student's turn to talk, they are it. If the timer goes off while they are still it, then they move to the end of the line.
I have never had students not like this game. There are several variations to it, but the same basic concept is the same throughout, and students get really into it. It is one of the easiest ways to get my students speaking Spanish for 45-60 minutes without even thinking about it.
Click on the link to download the lesson description and give it a try!
